News: Trace Sulfur determination in metals in the ppb range

The determination of Sulfur and Carbon in metals by combustion analysis is a well-known analytical method.

This method with well established procedures for sample preparation and analysis normally covers the range from ppm up to some percent of sulfur.

Nowadays due to increasing number of high tech applications (e.g. alloys for modern aircraft engines) the industry is looking for an analytical technique allowing low sulfur detection limit far below 1 ppm.

To increase sensitivity in low range some approaches were used in the past like purge and trap principle and switching carrier gas to helium, but in most cases speed, convenience and ease of maintenance had to be sacrificed.

With continuation of the successful 844 Cornerstone series, LECO engineers have developed innovative analytical solutions incorporated into new CS844ES model.

With a newly developed valve system and special gas flow modifications this model offers significant decrease in LOD (limit-of-detection). The lower end of the analytical range starts from 0.0001mg Sulfur.

Standard LECO 844 series analyzer being equipped with high sensitivity “ES mode” offering extremely wide detection range from 100 ppb up to 6 % for a 1 g sample.

Even highest Sulfur concentrations can be measured on the same instrument without memory effect.
