Identification of several trace components in polymer extracts is made possible by using chemical ionization (CI) and the superior mass accuracy of Pegasus® GC-HRT.  This new approach minimizes matrix interferences and provides a comprehensive profile of polymer extracts that is of great value for quality control or obtaining key information for process and synthetic development.  As EI mass spectrometry provides valuable information through library comparisons, we show here how to overcome the sometimes misleading library hits that can occur due to spectral similarity of homologous compounds.  Likewise, chemical ionization—high resolution time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HR-CI) makes possible the ability to confidently determine molecular formulas of labile compounds.
